Career Options

Jah Kente International program offers a unique experience, as interns interact with peers from around the world through a hybrid approach that combines virtual and in-person exchanges. A distinctive feature of the internship is that DC interns interact with youths from around the world, both in person and virtually. Youths come to Washington, D.C., from all over the world.

Interns engage with issues that affect their own lives and gain a deeper understanding of the local, national, and global dimensions of developments, as well as how the world they live in works and the dynamics that drive change or prevent systems from changing. The internship provides interns with a comprehensive understanding of the world in various dimensions, with the skills necessary to navigate the complexities of international relations. It encourages active citizenship and global awareness, preparing students for a world that is increasingly interconnected and complex.

The internship equips students with transferable skills, including research, debate, and negotiation, which are valuable in various fields. Interns gain insight into how political decisions impact societies worldwide and how they can contribute positively to addressing global challenges and opportunities, including through local projects. This course is essential for fostering critical thinking, global awareness, and interdisciplinary learning, which are crucial for success in the modern workforce and beyond.

Who should consider this Internship: Career Pathways:
Individuals with a background in global politics, international relations, and diplomacy can pursue a variety of career paths. Here are some of the high-top career options: high-skilled, high-wage, and in-demand occupations:

Diplomacy: Working in diplomatic services for the United States or any country where an intern holds citizenship, including dual citizenship/nationality. In representing a nation abroad, diplomats engage in negotiations, protecting the welfare interests of citizens abroad, and promoting political, economic, and cultural relations. A military attaché or defense attaché, sometimes known as a "military diplomat", is an official responsible for military matters within a diplomatic mission.

International Organizations: Working in international organizations such as the United Nations and the World Bank requires a deep understanding of global politics and international affairs.

International Development and Humanitarian Aid. For interns interested in leveraging their background to work with Tier I humanitarian organizations, such as the Red Cross, Oxfam, and Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders), this internship provides a solid foundation in policy development, project management, and advocacy.

Journalism and Media: As a global politics journalist or analyst, you could contribute to outlets with an international outreach.

International Law: This internship provides valuable preparation for understanding the political context and legal issues at both local, national, and international levels. International lawyers assist individuals, companies, or governments in ensuring compliance with international laws and regulations. International lawyers work in various fields, including business, diplomacy, human rights, and environmental laws.

Academia and Research: Some students may be passionate about or considering a career in academia or research, potentially leading to roles as educators at various levels in thematic areas.

Policy Analyst: A policy analyst analyzes public policies and offers insights to guide strategic decisions within organizations. Policy analysts utilize extensive research to promote reforms and other policy solutions.

Economic Analyst: Examining macroeconomic data to identify commercial movements and develop projections and plans for their company based on such trends.

Criminal Justice: A background in global politics and international relations can be beneficial for a career in criminal justice. Knowledge of international law, global issues, and the interconnectedness of crime and justice can enhance the ability to address complex and global challenges. Career opportunities include political consulting and intelligence analysis. Understanding the relationship between crime and justice from an international perspective is increasingly essential in today's interconnected world.
