Before the more familiar civil rights events of the 1960s, the movement had already been set in motion with the “Journey of Reconciliation” In 1947. During the 1947 action, 17 African American and White bus riders tested the 1946 U.S. Supreme Court decision.  In first Freedom Ride, then known as the Journey of Reconciliation, tested the Supreme Court ruling but gained little coverage.
