To introduce myself, I would like to share with you that I am from Southeast, Washington D.C, and a 2017 graduate of the Anacostia Senior High School. I am currently a senior in undergrad, pursuing a Bachelors in Political Science with a minor in French at Sewanee: the University of the South and graduating before MBSYEP 2021.
I have career interests in law and diplomacy. During my time at Sewanee, I was afforded the opportunity to study abroad in Senegal and Morocco. Here, I was immersed in language, culture, and community. With awareness of the disconnect between African-Americans and the African continent and community, I can conclude that studying abroad was a very enriching experience for me.
I constantly hope that other young people from Ward 8 D.C can gain exposure to the many wonders of the world, that being travel. I’ve also traveled to Paris, Ecuador, Cuba, and Jamaica.
In Summer 2020, aside from my commitments at Jah Kente International, I worked with a Ugandan NGO by the name of Friends of Canon Gideon Foundation (FOCAGIFO). I worked with a partner on a 40-page research project that explored the best practices for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) schools. Experiences as such, has made me extremely passionate about connecting with people and places across the globe, particularly throughout the African diaspora.
I hope that my experiences and civic engagement will inspire other youths to see beyond what they are accustomed to. I will continuously pour into my community in order to help children, young adults, and adults do things that they’ve never imagined possible for themselves.
