Redemption Ritual: Inviting The Ancestors To Be Present

The historic Paul Laurence Dunbar High School in Washington, D.C. and the Jah Kente International's Sankofa Project present Redemption Ritual: Inviting The Ancestors To Be Present for African American History Month. They have joined forces with a group of dedicated students, seasoned professionals in the entertainment industry and educators. The production embraces dance, music, drama, poems and songs, featuring the classic works of Countee Cullen, Langston Hughes, Robert Hayden, Richard Wright, Margaret Walker, Sterling A. Brown and James Weldon Johnson. These giants of poems illuminate the core of the African experience in Africa and in America. The exceptional talent of Ed Bishop who recently directed August Wilson's "Fences" and Eugene O'Neill's "The Emperor Jones" is the Artistic Director; Melvin Deal, Founder of the African Heritage Dances and Drummers is the choreographer for music and dance; Maurice Johnson, actor and producer is stage manager; Prince NO-RA, Production Supervisor of the Drama Guild and known for set, lights and sound design for celebrity talents from Earth, Wind and Fire to Ramsey Lewis is the Technical Director; Charisma Wooten is the Costume Designer; Muriel Martin-Horns, an educator and former Fulbright Teacher coordinates the project for Dunbar's principal Dr. Harriett Kargbo.; and Rufus T. Stevenson, CEO of Jah Kente International continues his efforts to nurture and promote the cultural spirit. He states "the Sankofa Project is an arts education project that provides skills for our youth to become global citizen, taking the best from the past to move successfully though life."
